Hair Routine for Thick, Unruly, Wavy Hair

Today’s post is about my hair care routine. I will go into more depth here than I did in my video. For the past few months, I’ve been testing out new shampoo and conditioner combinations to review. Therefore, I have no product loyalty at the moment. However, I will recommend other products I’ve liked in the past.

It’s important to note that it isn’t just about what products are used in the hair, but if they are used correctly, which ultimately makes the biggest difference with hair.

My Hair Routine for Thick, Unruly, Wavy Hair

Before hopping into the shower, I comb or brush my hair while it is dry to remove knots. This is best done when the hair is dry because wet hair is at it’s most vulnerable to breakage.

My rule of thumb is that shampoo is only for the roots and conditioner is only to be used a couple of inches away from the scalp until the ends of the hair.

To get the biggest bang from shampoo, make sure the hair is thoroughly soaked with water before proceeding. Use the tips of the fingers, careful not to apply pressure to the scalp with the nails, to massage the scalp with shampoo.

I’m not a fan of using my fingers because I can miss spots when in a hurry or ruin my manicure. I have been testing out the Scalp Invigorator from Vanity Planet (get 50% off with my code: ALEXASBRUSH). If you’re on a tighter budget, look for a Hair Shampoo Massage Brush with flexible bristles online or at a hair supply store.

Once the shampoo has been rinsed, move onto conditioning the ends of the hair. I clip my hair while letting the conditioner work it’s magic and move on to washing and exfoliating my body. Once I’m finished with the body wash, I rinse my hair away from my body by leaning forward.

Hair products can be the culprits of body acne and skin irritation. In order to avoid these, I try to maintain the least amount of skin contact between my skin and hair products, particularly conditioner.

If you have issues with frizz, opt for wrapping the hair with a cotton t-shirt as opposed to a regular towel. I typically let my hair air-dry with a bit of leave in conditioner for added hydration. For heatless hairstyles, I wear my damp hair in a braid or top knot while it dries completely.

I treat my hair to a rinse out mask every 1-2 weeks, whether it be with the René Furterer Intense Nourishing Mask or Klorane Mask with Desert Date.
